Creamy Cajun Chicken

Creamy Cajun Chicken is the perfect combination of bold, zesty flavors and rich, velvety sauce. Juicy, tender chicken is coated in a perfectly spiced Cajun seasoning and simmered in a luscious, creamy sauce that’s packed with flavor.

How to Make Creamy Cajun Chicken

This creamy cajun chicken recipe is as easy as it gets! Everything comes together in just one pan, making cleanup a breeze. Simply season the chicken, sear it to golden perfection, then whip up the rich and flavorful sauce in the same skillet. Let everything simmer together, and in no time, you’ll have a restaurant quality meal without any hassle!

  1. Season the Chicken: In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of the cajun seasoning and black pepper. Rub all the chicken pieces with the spice mixture on both sides.
  2. Sear the Chicken: Heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the seasoned chicken to the pan and cook it for about 3 minutes on each side. You just need to sear it, but not fully cook it. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.
  3. Sauté the Onion: Add the onion and garlic to the pan and cook until the onion is tender, about 2-3 minutes. Whisk the flour into the pan to create a paste.
  4. Make the Sauce: Slowly stir in the chicken broth, heavy cream, grated parmesan cheese, and the remaining tablespoon of Cajun seasoning. Reduce the heat to medium-low.
  5. Continue to Cook and Serve: Return the chicken to the creamy cajun sauce and cook for another 5-8 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. Season to taste with salt, if needed. Garnish creamy cajun chicken with fresh parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes if desired, and serve!

Creamy Cajun Chicken Tips and Variations

I love it when recipes are easy to change so I can use what I have on hand or what I prefer. This is one of those recipes! Here are a few different options:

  • Can I adjust the spice level? This dish isn’t too spicy, but if you aren’t a fan of any spice, you can leave out the red pepper flakes. Conversely, for more heat, add more red pepper flakes.
  • Can I use whole chicken pieces? You can use chicken thighs or whole breasts for this recipe. But you will need to sear the chicken for longer and then cook in the sauce for additional time. Chicken needs to temp out to 165ºF.
  • Can I add vegetables? Yes! You can add vegetables to creamy cajun chicken. When you cook the onion, try adding diced red or green peppers, jalapeños, corn, green beans, or whatever you like!
  • Is there a low sodium option? They now sell cajun seasoning without the salt! If you’re watching your salt intake, this is a good way to get the flavor of cajun without added salt! You can also make homemade cajun seasoning and adjust the salt.

Leftover Creamy Cajun Chicken

  • In the Refrigerator: Store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • In the Freezer: I don’t recommend storing creamy cajun chicken in the freezer as the sauce may separate, but you can freeze it in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
  • Reheating: Reheat individual portions in the microwave in 30 second increments. Or reheat on the stove top until heated through.
